Reboot the desired computer with the target SSD to make sure it works.

  • Conditioning step: install a new Windows 10 installation onto the target SSD using a bootable Windows 10 32-bit (1903) USB installer.
  • As summarized in a comment in that discussion, it went like this: The one I found particularly intriguing actually did work for me. In my case, to avoid possible problems due to a larger drive being cloned onto a smaller one, I first used a partitioner (i.e., MiniTool Partition Wizard) to shrink the program partition on the source drive, and then cloned the partition only, not the whole drive, using AOMEI Backupper.Īmong various solutions suggested in the SuperUser discussion, I tried some and doubted others. The only result of boot attempts was a flashing cursor. In both cases, the target SSD failed to boot, even after use of the various command line suggestions (e.g., bootrec /fixboot). The specific problem described in SuperUser was that the person tried both EaseUS Todo Backup and Macrium Reflect to clone a Windows installation on an HDD to an SSD. The machine itself was slow to the point of being unusable I thought the SSD might speed it up a bit. In my case, the hard disk drive (HDD) was a 500GB Western Digital serving as system and data drive in an old 32-bit desktop machine, and the solid state drive (SSD) with which I proposed to replace it was a 240GB PNY CS1311.

The problem posed in that SuperUser discussion: Windows 10 fails to boot after HDD clone to SSD. A later post describes dd commands, run from a Linux live USB drive, that might also work.

The first paragraphs (below) describe one solution that worked for me later paragraphs describe a retry with different hardware. I didn’t keep notes of the various suggestions I tried along the way I didn’t expect it to be as complicated as it was. This post is a relatively brief elaboration on a SuperUser discussion.
